Ms. Ümit Boyner, President of TÜSİAD made a statement on the occupational accidents

"Employers, employees and public authorities, we all have to work together in order to develop preventive measures, create secure and healthy working conditions and redress the gloomy record of occupational safety in Turkey.”

“In our country, nearly every day in the news we witness an occupational accident involving casualties and serious injuries. We feel deeply sorry for these accidents. Disregarding crucial elements of safety and health and hazarding human life is unacceptable.  Most of the occupational accidents result from ignorance and negligence and they are avoidable; hence this is essentially a problem of mental attitude.

However, to fight effectively with this problem, we have to consider every aspect of it: mental attitude, infrastructure, specialised human resources, regulations, etc.  Employers, employees and public authorities, we all have to work together in order to develop preventive measures, and create secure and healthy working conditions.

We believe that the proposals of workers' and employers' organizations should be taken into consideration in the final version of Occupational Health and Safety Bill, already submitted to the Bureau of the Assembly and soon to be on the agenda of the General Assembly. But we must not forget that regulations are never sufficient by themselves. Training programs on occupational safety, exchange of information and experience, efforts to raise awareness, effective inspections and measures against unregistered employment are all necessary.

TÜSİAD attaches a great importance to this attitude towards the issues of occupational health and safety not only in the workplaces of our members, but also in the workplaces of all business partners such as suppliers and dealers.”
