TÜSİAD, in collaboration with the Federation of Industrial Associations (SEDEFED) Sektörel Dernekler Federasyonu (SEDEFED) and the Turkish Iron and Steel Producers Association organized a conference titled "Sectoral Overview of Turkish Industry: Iron and Steel Industry” on March 21st, 2012, at the meeting hall of İskenderun Chamber of Trade and Industry, in İskenderun.
Following the welcome speech of Mr. Namık Kemal Ekinci, Member of the Board of Director of the Turkish Iron and Steel Producers Association and President of the Board of Director of the Turkish Steel Exporters’ Association (ÇİB), opening statements of the meeting were delivered by Ms. Ümit Boyner, President of the Board of Directors of TÜSİAD, Mr. Timur Erk, President of the Board of Directors of SEDEFED and Undersecretary of the Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology.
In her speech Ms. Ümit Boyner indicated that the legal framework of the incentive system must treat all the industries equally. Ms. Boyner stated that very important steps are taken in implementing action plans incorporating elements of both industrial strategy and sectoral strategy, and therefore in improving investment and business environment of Turkey and strengthening the competitiveness of the Turkish industry. She noted that it became clear that for the countries having a solid, efficient and competitive industrial base, overcoming the crises is less problematic and she added: “As TÜSİAD, we are aware that the industrial strategy of Turkey should have an integrated structure which contains horizontal actions to increase competitive advantage of our industries and we base our opinions and positions on this fundamental principle. We are pleased that the Turkish Industrial Strategy Document declared in January 2011 answers the needs of our industry adequately.”
First session of the seminar, titled as “Iron and Steel Strategy Document and its Industrial Consequences” was moderated by Mr. Nezih Barut, Member of the Board of Directors and President of the Sectoral Policies Committee of TÜSİAD. In this session Mr. Veysel Yayan, Secretary General of the Turkish Iron and Steel Producers Association and Mr. Süfyan Emiroğlu, General Director for Industry of the Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology made presentations.
The second session of the seminar, titled as “Sectoral Overview of Turkish Industry: Iron and Steel Industry” was moderated by Mr. Agah Uğur, President of the TÜSİAD Industrial Policies Forum. In this session, Mr. İsmail Akçakmak, General Manager and Member of the Board of İsdemir, Mr. Fatih Keseroğlu General Manager of Ekinciler Demir-Çelik A.Ş., Mr. Uğur Dalbeler, General Manager of Çolakoğlu Metalurji, Mr. Mehmet Betil Executive Director of Borçelik, and Mr. Süfyan Emiroğlu, General Director for Industry of the Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology delivered their speeches.
