TÜSİAD launched a report in the context of its activities on the sustainable health care system

TÜSİAD has launched the report titled "The Role of Electronic Health Records in Chronic Disease Management for a Sustainable Health Care System" in its headquarters in Istanbul on July 3rd, 2012. The opening speech of the meeting launching the report was given by Ms. Ümit Boyner, President of the Board of Directors of TÜSİAD.

Ms. Ümit Boyner indicated in her speech that the burden of the health care for the chronic diseases is a risk threatening the financial sustainability of the health care system. Ms. Boyner continued with the following remarks: “This burden is growing in our country in parallel to the global trends. 71% of the deaths in our country are caused by chronic diseases. According to a study of the OECD and World Bank the burden of the chronic diseases which stood at 66% in the year 2002, is anticipated to reach 80% by 2020. This ratio by itself must be seen as a warning which should be taken into account in planning the future of the service programs in the health care sector.” Ms. Boyner said that the prepared report discuss the merits of effective use of the electronic health records in chronic disease management in order to increase both the success rate of therapies and the efficiency of the system. Ms. Ümit Boyner expressed that the objective of the “integrated health care services” is providing patients sustainable and high quality health services.

The report "The Role of Electronic Health Records in Chronic Disease Management for a Sustainable Health Care System" is prepared by Prof. Dr. Erdal Akalın (Project Manager), Ass. Prof. Dr. Mine Durusu Tanrıöver (Project Reporter and Faculty Member of the Hacettepe University) and Faik Sayran (Project IT Advisor), within the framework of the activities of the Health Policies and Strategies Sub-Working Group under to the Health Working Group within the Social Affairs Committee of TÜSİAD.

The report discusses every aspect of the role of electronic health records in chronic disease management and investigates the adequacy of the existing personal health record infrastructure with a case study about hypertension, a chronic disease widespread in Turkey.

The meeting included a session titled “The Use of Electronic Health Infrastructure in Chronic Disease Management, in Turkey” moderated by Mr. Tuncay Teksöz, Chairman of the Health Policies and Strategies Sub-Working Group of TÜSİAD. Dr. Ekrem Atbakan, Deputy Undersecretary at the Health Ministry, and Mr. Yadigar Gökalp, Vice President of Social Security Institution made a speech.

TÜSİAD Health Working Group working under the auspices of the Social Affairs Committee of TÜSİAD publishes research papers on the health system with the support of academicians and shares the results with relevant authorities and the general public. Its activities for the current year include the report titled "The Role of Electronic Health Records in Chronic Disease Management for a Sustainable Health Care System".

The life expectancy as the measure of the “health” is one of the indices of economic growth. An increasing portion of the national health budgets is allocated to the chronic diseases. The burden of the chronic diseases is growing in our country in parallel to the global trends and has the potential of throwing the health system in financial impasses. The report moves ahead from these premises, and emphasize the importance of the chronic disease management from the point of sustainability and of the efficiency and quality increase attainable by effective use of electronic health records.
