The decision of the Supreme Election Board to bar the parliamentary candidacy of certain candidates known to support the Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) has led to widespread controversy.

This latest decision of the Board once again shows the gap between existing laws that were mostly enacted in the period following the 12th September 1980 coup, and modern democratic standards. A legal solution to the situation we now find ourselves in must be found that serves social harmony; in any case, the restructuring of the Constitution, the law on political parties and the election law in conformity with a modern, participatory democracy is essential, and should be a common priority objective of all our political parties.
