  • Mr. Muharrem Yılmaz, President of the board of Directors of TÜSİAD attended to the Uludağ Economy Summit

Mr. Muharrem Yılmaz, President of the Board of Directors of TÜSİAD attended to the Uludağ Economy Summit organized by Capital and Economist Magazines with the support of Governorship of Bursa, on March 29th, 2013, delivered a speech in the session titled “New Turkey, New Opportunities”.

In his speech, Mr. Muharrem Yılmaz emphasized that Turkey needs focusing on the integration with the Western World. Mr. Yılmaz reminded the internal and external threats on the Turkish economy continued as follows: “Turkey is very successful in establishing its macro balances. It also improved the investment environment and an investment inflow has occurred. However it must be stressed that if we cannot achieve labor flexibility and let the current state of affairs of the labor costs to continue, there is a risk of adverse effect on our competitive power. On the other hand I think that the current account deficit has also a serious adverse impact on our investment environment. We reduced the current deficit from 10% to 6%, but it still is our Achilles’ heel. You cannot consume without producing, we have to develop an economy of production.”

Mr. Yılmaz remarked that there exists a mindset ready to compromise democracy in return of welfare and societies might be forced to choose the welfare and to postpone democracy, but TÜSİAD is against this dichotomy. About the process of a new constitution Mr. Yılmaz expressed his opinions as follows: “The constitution is a social contract. I believe this constitution is an opportunity for promoting the Turkish democracy to a higher level. We are also observing that a agreeable peace process complements and supports this opportunity. If Turkey completes this peace process in a lasting way, if it can end the armed conflicts, terrorism and violence by achieving a great social consensus crowned with a new constitution, immense prospects will be opened before Turkey.”
